10 Movies To Blame For The Current State Of Movies
9. Soulless "Live-Action" Disney Remakes - Alice In Wonderland
Disney is releasing live-action remakes of their most iconic animated classics with a mechanical efficiency at present, with the past year alone delivering Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King remakes to mixed reviews yet (mostly) monstrous commercial success.
Many have criticised Disney for their "soulless" approach to taking these cherished IP and regurgitating them with contemporary visual effects, while lacking most of the heart or style that made them popular in the first place.
The trend started in earnest with 2010's Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland, which plonked poor Mia Wasikowska in the middle of a sterile, blurry digital wasteland that boasted none of the artistry of its animated predecessor.
It went on to gross $1.025 billion regardless, and though Disney's subsequent "live-action" remakes have occasionally stirred up worthwhile results - especially The Jungle Book - for the most part these films feel cranked-out by an algorithm along a predefined conveyor belt.
But of course, they keep blowing up the box office. The Lion King's $1.655 billion haul makes it the highest-grossing Disney remake to date, and the company already has more than a dozen other remakes, prequels, and tangential projects in the works.
Nothing stops this train, basically, but we as audiences pretty much only have ourselves to blame.
