9. The Rapture

One of the less conventional end of the world scenarios that we've seen in cinema doesn't come from monsters or nuclear weapons, but the idea of the Rapture, whereby Christ returns to Earth and allows those chosen for Heaven to ascend there with him. It might be easy to think that a film like this would simply be an exercise in bible-bashing, but the result of Michael Tolkin's wrenching drama is something altogether more potent and haunting, examining our various relationships and non-relationships with religion and how this would inform our fates
if the Rapture took place. Characters find themselves questioning their belief and lack of belief in the face of these events, making for a climax that's absolutely unforgettable, boosted entirely by Mimi Rogers' outstanding performance.
