10 Movies Totally Ruined By Test Audiences

1. Little Shop Of Horrors

Scott Pilgrim
Warner Bros.

The original ending of Frank Oz’s 1986 horror comedy skewed closer to the nihilistic but grimly funny denouement of the Roger Corman-produced 1960 source material. Ending not only with Audrey 2 killing the cast but moving on to destroy New York City and quite possibly the world, it’s a closer which moves from dark twist to shockingly brutal so fast it’s hard to believe what you’re seeing.

It’s also an ending which fits the strange, tragi-comic tone of the preceding film. What’s less fitting is the post-test audience revised climax, wherein the villain is defeated, the leads go on to live happily ever after, and the unsettling tone of the movie is thrown out the window.

Look, we get it - a monster plant film was always going to be a hard sell. But that’s all the more reason to stick to your guns and keep the twisted original ending in all its spectacular, mean-spirited glory. A barrage of big budget FX, the incredible 23-minute sequence can now be seen online, but for years remained the subject of fan speculation.

Trust us - this one was worth the wait.
