10 Movies Where God Intervenes

4. Dogma (1999)

Valhalla Rising Mads Mikkelsen
Lionsgate

Born and bred Catholic, Kevin Smith kicked up a stink in the US religious community when he rounded up Jay and Silent Bob and released the blasphemous (their words) send up of everything Christianity holds dear, Dogma.

The film follows Bartleby and Loki (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon), two angels who have been sentenced to an immortal life on earth, amongst the humans, and who want nothing more than to get back to heaven. Lucky for them, an overzealous priest (played, rather appropriately, by George Carlin) has unwittingly created something of a loophole that will allow them to do just that. But it may also mean the end of existence as we know it.

With god holed up in a hospital room for most of the movie (it's a long story), things seem pretty dire until a last-minute intervention turns the tables. Turns out Alanis Morissette is the, umm, big guy upstairs. She swoops in to save the day at the eleventh hour, and when she opens her mouth you'd better pray you're not a sinner...
