10 Movies Where It Didn't Matter That The Hero Lost

2. The Jamaican Bobsled Team - Cool Runnings

In the Mouth of Madness Ending

There have been basketball teams, baseball teams, and boxers on this list that all found victory in defeat, but none of them hold a candle to the Jamaican Bobsled team. Aspiring Olympic sprinter Derice (Leon) was unwilling to wait for more years for the next games after failing to qualify, and so worked to set up Jamaica's first ever Bobsled team.

Through qualifying the Jamaicans were made to feel unwelcome because they were different, and the Association even changed rules to try and get them disqualified. They pushed through everything thrown at them however, and even managed to win everyone over during their time at the Calgary Winter Olympics. It was only because of a faulty sled that they finished in dead last place.

The point was driven home throughout the entire experience that winning didn't matter though. The team's coach, Irving Blitzer (John Candy) said that it was getting to represent their country that was the greatest honour any athlete could receive. He also told Derice that if you're not enough without a gold medal then you won't be enough with it. Well, the team showed spirit and heart, and proved damn well that they were enough without it.

They returned home to a hero's welcome, and competed in the Winter Games four years later as peers. Where they finished didn't matter in the slightest.
