10 Movies Where You Want The Villain To Win
1. Heat
Yet another Michael Mann film that masterfully juxtaposes interpretations of good and bad, we follow expert bank robber Neil, played by Robert De Niro, and his merry band of thieves as they plan their next big heist. Throughout the plot we see them meticulously planning, avoiding capture and locking horns with flawed super-cop Lt. Vincent, played by a twitchy Al Pacino.
Much like Vincent from Collateral, we form an ‘honour among thieves’ kind of respect for Neil’s bank robber as he conducts himself so carefully and professionally. You would think he was a doctor or lawyer rather than a consummate criminal.
It’s the legendary diner conversation between himself and Lt. Vincent, however, that confirms our love for this villain. They relate to each other on their worldview and the tedium of everyday life; we get the distinct sense that in another universe, these two opposites would have been the best of friends.
When the grudging respect of your on-screen rival is even gained, it’s impossible not to root for De Niro and co., as they attempt to pull off their heist casualty-free, abiding by a strange but honourable criminal code of ethics. A true masterclass in character work and well worth a watch if you’ve never seen it - if just for that diner scene.
