Director Christopher Nolan has built a reputation for inventive, often convoluted plots. Ever since 1998's Following, Nolan has entertained and challenged in equal measure, displaying a fondness for experimenting with cinematic time which, with 2020's Tenet, seemed to reach its inevitable conclusion.

In his previous film, Interstellar (2014), Nolan mixed known laws of physics with leaps of imagination to explore the possible effects of long-distance space travel. With 2010's Inception, the director played with notions of both time and consciousness to create an unforgettable, multi-layered experience. Even his historical feature, Dunkirk (2017), utilised three distinct, overlapping windows of duration - one week, one hour and one day.

With Tenet, all rules fly out the window as we enter a parallel universe in which time flows backwards. Protagonists and antagonists alike are able to jump from one to the other although, and this is where the brain-twisting originates, whilse in the 'reverse' world, they themselves are still moving 'forward,' at least from their own point of view.

If you didn't quite grasp the above, then you're in good company. Many viewers have come away from this visual spectacle with far more questions than answers, and debate is still on-going as to why, or if, Tenet makes any sense.
