10 Movies With Ridiculously Subtle Foreshadowing That Nobody Noticed
8. Bloody Christmas Is A Microcosm Of The Plot - L.A. Confidential
Kim Basinger won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her femme fatale turn in L.A. Confidential, despite her being a rather muted presence throughout the film. Clearly the Academy had a thing for busty blondes that year. Of course, her ultimate lack of involvement was clearly signposted along with the fate of every major character in Bloody Christmas; she's not involved. Based on a true event (unlike the rest of the film), Bloody Christmas pits a gang of drunk, vengeful policemen against a group of already victimised prisoners and is a destructive as you might have expected.
Kicking the whole plot into motion, it also doubles up as a showcase of where each of the principal characters will end up. Russell Crowe's Bud White jumps right in fists blazing, Guy Pearce's Exley tries to calm the whole thing quietly while Kevin Spacey's Vincennes tries to keep out completely but is unwittingly in dragged in, ending up with a blood splatter on his shirt where he'll eventually be shot. As well as setting up the characters, elements like Vincennes' gunshot wound firmly put this in the world of foreshadowing.
