10 Movies With Unexpectedly Brilliant Soundtracks
6. Shrek 2
The Shrek franchise was at the forefront of a (highly successful) movement in Western animation, where "kids" movies were trying to branch out into whole-family entertainment. This meant pleasing young children, parents and older siblings. And this meant things had to be done differently, including the soundtrack.
This is particularly evident with Shrek 2. For parents, there are old classics, like Lipps Inc.'s "Funkytown" and a Pete Yorn cover of Buzzcocks' "Every Fallen in Love". For kids, there's plenty of lightweight, upbeat material, like Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" and songs sung by the cast of the movie, as their characters.
But some of the pickings are just downright weird. But awesomely weird. Tom Waits' "Little Drop of Poison" is creepy and macabre, full of lines like "Did the Devil make the world while God was sleeping?"
And to top that off, there's even a smoking reference. Then there's Nick Cave's "People Ain't No Good", a slow, plaintive ballad, with lyrics that live up to the title, ruminating on the general suckage of the human race. With songs like these, you'd be lucky if they appealed to half the adults in the audience, let alone their kids.
Overall, Shrek 2 has to have one of the mostly brilliantly odd soundtracks of all time.
