10 Movies You Can Never Finish

5. The English Patient

Perhaps the quintessential example of an Oscar-bait movie - as immortalised by that classic Seinfeld episode - The English Patient went on to win nine of its twelve Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

It is the classically "worthy" awards film: a sweeping romantic war drama directed with a comforting tastefulness, gorgeously shot by John Seale, impeccably acted by a marvelous cast and...frequently tedious.

It's probably fair to say call The English Patient an acquired taste: for everyone who finds it sumptuously romantic, there's someone who finds it an absolute chore to sit through.

The film's perceived "importance" has prompted many to try and watch it, but if you're doing so on a lazy Sunday afternoon, it'll most likely knock you right out. Brew a pot of coffee and sit up straight if you actually want a chance of making it to the end.
