10 Movies You Didn't Know Were Becoming TV Shows
1. The Talented Mr. Ripley
Andrew Scott is on a career high following his turn as “Hot Priest” on Fleabag. Scott is set to star as identity-thieving sociopath, Mr. Ripley—which won’t be too far off from his Moriarty character on Sherlock. The series is based on the popular 1999 film starring Matt Damon in the titular role, including the dream cast of Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The show is said to follow the events of the 1999 film in the first season, and then hopefully extend out to stories later in the series, as there are four more novels written by author Patricia Highsmith. Many fans of the books were disappointed when a sequel was never made because there is so much more to the character to explore. Think Hannibal Lecter-level intelligence, only instead of eating people, he kills members of the aristocracy and takes over their identities—all set in the mid-20thcentury.
Steven Zaillian will act as showrunner. Zaillian boasts an impressive resume of screenplay credits including The Irishman, Moneyball, and Schindler’s List. With the up-and-coming Scott cast in the lead and Zaillian being such a huge creative talent, The Talented Mr. Ripley could turn out to be the next big prestige television show.
Zaillian will write and direct all 8 episodes in the limited series’ first season. Expect it to premiere on Showtime in the fall of 2020. No word yet on other cast members, but you can expect some pretty noteworthy stars to be attached to this very soon as production starts ramping up.
