10 Movies You Have To Watch AGAIN To Fully Understand
7. Mulholland Drive (2001)
David Lynch's dense Hollywood dream is not an unusual take for the director by any stretch of the imagination, but it sure does tie the brain in knots.
Parallel lives collide in the Hollywood hills, as fresh-faced Betty (Naomi Watts) and amnesiac Rita (Laura Harring) attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's missing memory, and an uncanny Los Angeles sets the scene for the chaos that unfolds.
A commentary on the nature of stardom, Hollywood and the falsity of everything that comes with it, Mulholland Drive nonetheless makes neither its themes nor its story particularly easy to comprehend. The first watch will have you scurrying to the forums and scouring interviews with Lynch, trying to work out what you've just watched, but there are no answers but those within the film itself.
Second, third, fourth, fifth viewings stack up the clues and subtleties scattered throughout the picture that allow something of a skewed jigsaw to form. But, no matter how many times you revisit Mulholland Drive, armed with your 'David Lynch's 10 Clues to Unlocking This Thriller' card, you may always feel like there is a piece missing.
