As you may be aware, Interstellar started out as a Spielberg project, and the venerable director worked with screenwriter Jonathan Nolan to develop the story before relinquishing the project when his DreamWorks production company shifted sites from Paramount to Disney. As such, it should come as no surprise that Chris Nolan found Spielbergs films and aesthetic to be a recurring influence as he made the project his own, and he has been quoted as saying: Theres a language to those films thats very classical, almost old-fashioned, and Spielberg and Lucas and all those guys just did it so well. As Spielbergs next movie after Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind arrived with a considerable weight of expectation, and duly delivered. Richard Dreyfuss a quintessential Spielberg everyman stars as Roy Neary, an ordinary Joe whose life is forever changed when a chance sighting of a UFO sparks an obsession that leads to an unforgettable climax. As regards the impact of films like Close Encounters on Interstellar, Nolan has commented: what I loved about some of the best of those films of that period, and what I tried to do with this film, was that whatever the fanciful element of the story was, they were about families about relationships. Judging by the poignant trailer images of Matthew McConaugheys Cooper struggling with the prospect of losing his family, the Spielberg spirit is alive and well in Interstellar.
I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
