10 Movies You Only Like Because Everybody Else Does
7. Citizen Kane (1941)
Citizen Kane is often regarded as the "greatest movie of all-time," something that most movie-goers don't like to outwardly disagree with for the sake of their reputations. Is Citizen Kane the greatest movie of all-time, though? Who knows? How is it possible to lay claim to something like that, anyway? Still, regardless of its reputation, it's still a great film... right?
Well, it's hard to tell these days - once something has been labelled "the greatest ever" by a large number of knowledgeable film people, it's hard to dispute. Nobody wants to say that Orson Welles' seminal film is overrated, but actually watching it - you know actually sitting down and watching the movie from beginning to end - it's hard to see what all the fuss is about. Technically, it's brilliant, but the movie is lacking in so many other important factors.
Are there good moments? Yes. It it an interesting film? Yes. Does it seem like most people are declaring Citizen Kane a masterpiece because it's seen to be the right thing to do? Absolutely. This is far slower, duller picture than cinema-goers to seem to want to admit for fear of "being wrong." But everyone has been there, wondering what, exactly, the big deal is. As a masterclass in film technique, it's essential; as an entertainment, it's lacking.
