10 Movies You Should Never Watch Alone

'Lynchian' has long been a widely overused term applied to just about any new film that comes along with a hint of surrealism to it, more often than not with the off-the-wall comedic overtones of Twin Peaks in mind.

However, David Lynch's surrealistic approach frequently veers into dark and deeply unsettling territory; while none of his films might necessarily be classed as horror, he has without doubt made at least a few of the scariest films in living memory.

Lynch's 1977 debut feature Eraserhead is without doubt among the weirdest movies you're ever likely to see, and the stranger it gets, the deeper into your head it gets until it's pretty much a living nightmare.

Essentially, the film is about the gradual psychological breakdown of a hapless young man living a desolate existence in a deplorable apartment, who finds himself unwittingly stuck with a wife and child. Soon enough he is alone with the baby, whose unearthly wails suggest it might not be entirely human.

However, Eraserhead is a film in which nothing can be taken entirely at face value; essentially, it's the anxieties of adulthood made ever more palpable and horrific. Very little of it makes clear-cut sense, but it's pretty much guaranteed to haunt you until long after the end credits roll, even if it's served up with a sizeable dollop of gallows humour.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
