10 Movies You Turned Off After The Opening Scene

4. The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)

A Serbian Film
Lucasfilm

There's a new pastime that's been developing steadily since 2015 and one that has literally millions of players; complaining about the Disney Star Wars films.

As 2019 was drawing to a close, the final film in the sequel trilogy was about to debut and JJ Abrams had a LOT to get through. The opening crawl, however, put many viewers off right out of the gate and more objective film fans were left scratching their heads.

The opening scene shoehorns in a dead OT villain and immediately retcons The Last Jedi with no attempt to explain either in a satisfying way. With no real planning or character development allowing for a meaningful conclusion, not only to this trilogy but the trilogy of trilogies, The Rise Of Skywalker was regrettably, a predictable mess.

Kylo Ren successfully tracks down a reborn Emperor Palapatine, who promises Ren the 'Final Order' fleet and a throne of his own if he addresses the Rey problem. Luke's victory is rendered meaningless and Snoke is reduced to a decoy/prototype; years, decades of groundwork deconstructed in mere minutes.

There's no build up in the previous two films to introduce another main villain this late in the day. It also renders Kylo Ren's victory over Snoke in TLJ (and by extension his character arc) to nothing in the opening crawl alone. Sorry SW fans but admitting there is a problem is the first step to fixing it - tragically, this film was dead on arrival.
