10 Mysterious Sci-Fi Films That Gave Nothing Away
9. Enemy
Enemy is not the first entry on this article to deal with doppelgängers and it will not be the last. It just goes to show that human doubles and psychedelic sci-fi go hand-in-hand.
In Enemy, a disheartened college professor called Adam is watching a movie when he realises one of the actors looks exactly like him. Naturally, Adam tracks down this actor, Anthony, to learn if the two have a connection beyond their appearance. Are they long-lost twins? Is one of them from a parallel dimension? Is Adam crazy? Are they both real? Since it's on this list, you've probably guessed the answer is never made clear.
Enemy doesn't rely on extravagant sets or a big budget and yet, remains one of the most compelling and provocative sci-fi films of recent times. At only 90 minutes (half the length of some of the director's other movies), Enemy creates an ambiguous atmosphere and compelling drama that never relies on exposition. It doesn't have a linear structure, making many scenes deliberately disjointed.
Also, the film's unexplained Kafka-esque obsession with spiders is guaranteed to warrant discussion amongst viewers.
