10 Not-So-Traditional Christmas Flicks

7. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

Considering that the mythological figure we know as Santa Claus originates from the Nordic regions of Europe, it's refreshing to see a movie made in his "homeland" that is a complete butchering of the jovial interpretation he's morphed into today. Rare Exports is a Finnish film that reimagines Santa as a supernatural creature that punishes naughty children instead of rewarding nice ones. When a local family manages to catch this creature in a trap, they decide to make a profit off of it by selling to a scientist that may be unearthing something even more sinister. Expertly crafted and original as sin, Rare Exports manages to be a movie that is both scary and fun (often at the same time) that also functions as a film about the closeness of family, which is another tenet of the Christmas season. Destined to be a cult classic, it serves as a good reminder that the jolly old elf wasn't always so jolly.
