After the 'Disney Renaissance' of the early 1990's that gave us classics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King, Walt Disney Animation Studios suffered something of a creative lull towards the end of the decade as Pixar redefined the very idea of the animated feature, with the majority of the studio's output failing to reach the high bar set by the previously mentioned all-time greats.

During this period, the Mouse House also suffered a couple of major commercial disasters, with Treasure Planet still listed as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, costing the studio a write-down of over $85m. Despite this reputation the movie remains a vastly underrated entry in the Disney canon, and was even nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

Although setting Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless novel in outer space gives the movie an interesting premise, the script doesn't deviate too far from the source material, yet suffers from some weak characterization and a reliance on the typical Disney formula. However, Treasure Planet boasts plenty of stunning visuals and great set-pieces, with both the animation and the movie itself successfully pulling off the delicate balance between the classic and cutting edge.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
