10 Obscure Cult Horror Films

6. They Don't Cut The Grass Any More (1985)

05.02.2013they This is one for gore mongers. Serious gore mongers. People who idolise Herschell Gordon Lewis. Like Lewis, the gore is pretty crap, but it has a kind of brutal savagery - people don't just get stabbed, they get disemboweled, decapitated, torn to shreds - that is horribly compelling to watch. Directed by Nathan Schiff on a micro budget the plot concerns two redneck Texan hillbillies - Billy Buck and Jacob who move to Long Island and find it is not to their liking. Their anger is vented liberally at the Northern Yuppies. People are murdered in different ways - chainsaw, dynamite, hammer, steel pipe etc.. This is an ultra low budget movie as I said, so don't be expecting Savini-esque effects. Everything is cheap and nasty. Critically reviled by horror film critics and fans alike, i am a one woman banner waving the flag for They Don't Cut The Grass Anymore. I think it is a tribute to Blood Feast and the ethos of H G Lewis. It is so deranged and so loopy it is impossible to derive anything but fun and laughter from it. The gore effects re cheap but they make up for it in their sheer extremism. If you enjoy a good old bad taste low budget high gore hilarious romp then come and join me with... They Don't Cut the Grass Anymore.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
