Fantastic Planet (La Planete Sauvage) is not a horror movie in the strictest terms, as the experimental adult animation doesn't entirely revolve around fear. However, the film is an incredibly unsettling, creepy, and terrifying experience with some of the most creatively grotesque images in cinema history.

It's safe to say that humanity has a complex relationship with animals. People tend to treat creatures outside of their species like subspecies knowing full well that they'll never be challenged. But, Fantastic Planet flips that on its head and shows what life would be like if a larger race treated us with the cold indifference we might give to an ant.

The movie takes place on a planet named Ygam, ruled over by colossal alien beings known as Draags. These beings use humans - known as Oms - as pets, but also pests to be exterminated. You see this world through the eyes of Terr, a young Om who is taken in as a pet before he escapes.

This movie's surreal imagery is as mesmerising as it is terrifying. The designs of the Draags makes excellent use of the uncanny valley, as they are just humanoid enough to seem real yet have cold dead stares that add the fear factor in. There's a true sense of anxiety and dread to the film, thanks to how small it makes humanity feel.

If you want a film that will make you question your size in the cosmos, then you'd better give this one a go.
