Mid-budget movies designed with a more mature audience in mind have become increasingly rare these days as the focus has shifted largely to blockbuster franchises, but we recently got a handful of very similar movies that delivered many of the same tropes in very different ways.
Many folks have already pointed out the obvious comparisons that can be made between Hotel Artemis and Bad Times at the El Royale, but they weren't the only ones that boasted an ensemble cast full of talented actors stuck under the same roof while delivering whip-smart dialogue and generally being cool as hell.
Quentin Tarantino was also in on the act with the period-set The Hateful Eight, while the confines of John Wick's Continental Hotel also boasted more than a few cool customers with sinister motivations all dwelling in one location. Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express and Rian Johnson's Knives Out were also cut from a similar cloth as Hollywood developed a short-lived fascination with movies based on an eclectic mix of extremely talkative types.
