10 Off The Wall Movie Casting Choices That Were Somehow Awesome

2. Heath Ledger Blows All The Naysayers Away In The Dark Knight

Joker Yeah, now we all think that Heath Ledger was super-awesome-best-ever at being the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, but do you remember what is was like before we got to see him in action? People went nuts, and not in a good way. How is that kid from 10 Things I Hate About You going to play the freakin' Joker? The actor who plays the gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain... I mean, are you kidding me, Nolan? That's who you've chosen to go up against the likes of Jack Nicholson, who pretty much owned this role back in the '80s? How wrong we were. What originally appeared to be a somewhat bizarre and totally unexpected casting choice emerged as one of the most memorable, iconic and wholly beloved villain portrayals in cinema history. People are still raving about this one. I'm serious: go ask someone on the street who their favourite villain is, and it's probably this guy. Ledger's dedication to the character ensured we were granted a vivid interoperation of Batman's most famous foe. It's proof that the best man for the job is sometimes the most unlikely candidate, I guess.
