10 Old-School Toho Kaiju That Legendary Need To Reincarnate
9. Gigan
A vicious alien cyborg dinosaur with lethal hooked blades for hands and a buzzsaw built into his chest? Yes, please.
The deliciously OTT Gigan features in two movies of the Showa period, Godzilla Vs. Gigan in 1972 and Godzilla Vs. Megalon the following year, and (like pretty much every other Kaiju) he returns in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.
In each, he is a ferocious opponent, particularly in close combat. His bladed weapons and relentless attacks are the first ever to make Godzilla bleed on-screen. And, in Final Wars, he ends up with chainsaws for hands, which is pretty tough to beat in terms of sheer rad attitude.
But unlike Hedorah, who may be suited to the more serious tone of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Gigan probably won’t be coming back anytime soon. His design is one of the most bizarre in Toho history, and his backstory is certainly one of the least amenable to a 'sensible' overhaul.
In Godzilla Vs. Gigan, insectoid aliens possess the bodies of dead humans, take over a children’s theme park, and use mind control to summon Gigan and Ghidora to cleanse Earth of its human population in order to create an insect utopia. It’ll be difficult for Legendary to build a serious message into that, but it’d be fantastic to see them try…
