10 One-Off Slasher Horror Movie Villains Who Must Return

2. The Butcher - The Midnight Meat Train

A film that was quickly forgotten on release despite future A-lister Bradley Cooper in the lead role, The Midnight Meat Train is a grubby little film with a magnificent twist ending and horrifyingly pragmatic philosophy.

Cooper plays Leon, a photographer looking to create work of genuine heft. When his latest efforts are dismissed, he ventures down to the terrifying subway to capture what dwells beneath. It’s a thread that shouldn’t be pulled, though, and from one missing person he discovers a slew of murders committed by Mahogany, a butcher played by Vinnie Jones.

Jones, of course, is a frightening figure whether or not he’s packing butchery equipment, but there’s more to The Midnight Meat Train than a singular killer. This is a story of what lies beneath; the Butcher isn’t a cold blooded murderer, but a public servant, creating sacrifices to satiate the creatures below the tracks, in order to keep the subway safe in the daytime.

The Midnight Meat Train sank without a trace (thanks in no small part to an accurate but gross title), but is well worthy of re-evaulation and even continuation.
