10 Opening Movie Scenes That Do More Than You Realise
1. The Sleeping Bag Foreshadowing - Tremors
Tremors is a damn delightful movie which wastes no time at all in letting the audience know everything they need to about its focal heroes, Val (Kevin Bacon) and his best bud Earl (Fred Ward).
After waking up one morning in the middle of their road trip, Val gives Earl a wake-up call by jumping up on down on the back of the truck bed where Earl's catching some zs.
Shouting "stampede!" prompts Earl to crawl off the edge of the truck bed in his sleeping bag, falling to the floor in what seems to be nothing more than a cute introduction to the film's central characters.
Except that's not quite all - this simple gag is actually foreshadowing how the final Graboid worm is killed at the very end of the movie, given that it ends up smashing into a cliff face and falling to its death on the rocks below, in a fashion extremely similar to Earl's tumble out of the truck.
And yet, no matter how many times you might've seen Tremors, it's totally forgivable for this to fly clean over your head. Tremors may not be high-art, but it is low-key masterful filmmaking.
