10 Opening Movie Scenes That Do More Than You Realise

5. Showing Eli's Blindness - The Book Of Eli

Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan

The Book of Eli is a not-bad movie with an S-tier plot twist, when it's revealed that nomadic protagonist Eli (Denzel Washington) has actually been blind all along.

As outlandish as the twist might seem, it is at least hinted at numerous times throughout the film, as makes rewatching it an absolute joy. And the first hint comes right at the start of the movie, when Eli enters an abandoned shack in search of supplies.

Look closely and you'll see that Eli bumps into a dresser while walking around, and though you could pawn this off as sheer clumsiness on Eli's part or a mistake which the filmmakers left in for the sake of authenticity, it's actually an incredibly slight clue that Eli can't see.

And there are tons of these throughout the movie, such as Eli later being able to smell a marauder from 30 feet away - an example of his sense of smell heightening due to his lack of vision (which is a mythic piece of non-science, by the way, but a commonly held one).
