10 Original Casting Choices That Would Have Ruined Famous Movies

10. Paul Newman - Woody (Toy Story)

Paul Newman When Toy Story wasn't the animated classic that it is considered to be today, the story was subjected to numerous changes - changes that, in retrospect, we're glad were changed in themselves, because they were pretty much insane. That's to say, before Woody was gifted with the voice of Tom Hanks, who perfectly nails that difficult territory between "arrogant jerk" and "lovable putz," Paul Newman was considered for the role. Newman, of course, was a movie veteran, and I'm not denying that he would have done a good job with voicing Woody. But the character would have been totally different had Newman's casting gone through, given that - at this stage in production - he was intended to be a metaphor for "old Hollywood," with Buzz (to be voiced originally by Jim Carrey, no less) as a metaphor for "new Hollywood." Not a bad idea, but not as good as what we eventually got.
