4. David Bowie - Captain Hook (Hook)
There's a weird little rule associated with the world of movies that denotes: if you cast David Bowie in something that he really doesn't belong in, he'll probably end doing an awesome job. This trope can be witnessed in movies like Labyrinth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and The Prestige - all unlikely roles for the musician, but man does he pull them off. I'm not sure it would have worked out similarly had he agreed to take on Captain Hook in Steven Spielberg's 1992 flick, though. Hook, to my mind, isn't a particularly great movie as it stands - one of the rare Spielberg ventures that I don't think works on any real level, except for... well, Dustin Hoffman's transformative performance as Captain James Hook, of course. He's a marvel here, chewing the scenery with obvious delight. Watching him is the only real pleasure this movie offers up, and I don't think Bowie could have pulled this one out of the bag in the same way.
