10 Original Endings That Would Have Ruined Great Movies

1. Pineapple Express (2008)

Columbia Pictures

The Ending We Got: After having burned down a drug laboratory and killed a bunch of people, Seth Rogen and James Franco head to a diner with Danny McBride, who has been betraying them for the course of the film, though that's okay now because all the bad stuff has gone away. Everybody looks like they've just gone on a year-long vacation to hell, McBride is bleeding to death, but the three stoners make the best of the situation, laughing it up and having a generally hilarious time, because that's what stoners do.

The Original Ending: You know what would be great? If, like, at the end of this raunchy, laugh-a-minute comedy, the two main characters are, um, machine-gunned to death for no good reason.

Oh. How... hilarious? Yes, whilst obliviously enjoying their victory, Seth Rogen and James Franco sit atop a couple of barrels smoking a joint. Then they notice there's another bad guy in the distance who they've apparently missed. Seemingly not bothered by the fact that there's a guy aiming a machine-gun at them, they're shot a dozen times each and killed - but not before Rogen can reach out his hand and poignantly touch Franco's, which is kind of sweet, we guess.

And yet this ending is like a punch in the common sense: "Thanks for enjoying our awesome comedy. Now leave the theatre feeling miserable and confused." It's never actually confirmed as to why or for what reason this particular footage was shot. Is it fake? Was it shot purely for the DVD? Perhaps, though it's probably safe to assume that it was supposed to be included for use in the movie at some point, presumably as a way of ending the flick. We like the diner ending better. Diners are funny.
