10 Oscar Recognised Movie Roles Actors Regret

4. Meryl Streep - The French Lieutenant's Woman

Weighing in with a staggering 18 Academy Award nominations and a further three wins over the course of an unrivalled big screen career, it's hard to believe that Meryl Streep would regret any part she's applied herself to and earned such critical acclaim for over the years.

But as the star herself revealed a few years back, there is actually one early performance that makes her uncomfortable upon a rewatch to this day. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show in 2016, Streep would state that the structure of the film "was sort of artificial" as she was playing "the actress playing 'The French Lieutenant's Woman,'" while at the same time being "an American actress playing a British woman." It's not hard to see why this made it quite difficult for Streep to fully connect to the character.

Streep has also admitted that being "young and new to this" likely influenced her opinion that, as she put it, "I didn't feel like I was living it ... You always want to do something better after the fact."

It's still hard to class this as a weak effort by any means, but Streep clearly feels she could've done more with the role.
