10 Outlandish The Dark Knight Rises Rumours That Didn't Come True

6. Eddie Murphy Is The Riddler

Speculation: Originating from The Sun of all places - that's the UK's dishrag of a so-called newspaper, for the uninitiated - this was one of the more outrageous and laughably dismissable rumours, albeit one that still managed to generate traction thanks to desperate hordes of Batman fans eager to cling to any morsel of apparent information about the highly-anticipated film. In typically authoritative fashion, the publication attested that the ink had dried and Murphy was confirmed to play a role that many, more plausibly, had touted would be filled by Johnny Depp, were Nolan to take the series that route. Other ludicrous assertions in the article included a 2010 release date - despite it being widely known by that point that Nolan was next at work on Inception - as well as Shia LaBeouf being cast as Robin, and, somewhat more believably, Rachel Weisz as Catwoman. Fact: While it boggles the mind to think that anyone could believe this silly rumour, it was officially debunked by Murphy's rep a few days later just to be safe.
