Could a talking raccoon, with a bit of an attitude problem and a penchant for shooting things, really work on screen? The answer was an unequivocal yes. However, one question that wasn't answered is just how Rocket came into being. Experiments are mentioned but never expanded on, but it could be something that sequel explores in more detail.

One theory is that Peter Quill's father, after sending Yondu to retrieve his son, ordered the creation of Rocket, using an animal he had encountered while on Earth (hence why he takes on the appearance of such a familiar creature rather than an alien species).

When Quill wasn't delivered, Rocket was simply abandoned, which is why he has turned out the way we see in the film. It goes against his comic origins - created to be a caretaker for a colony of mentally ill patients - but would certainly add an interesting twist to the dynamic between him and Star-Lord if their origins were to be revealed to be linked.
