1. Roy Scheider - All That Jazz
The 8 ½ of musicals (although Nine was the musical version of 8 ½), All That Jazz is a semi-autobiographical by Bob Fosse. Roy Scheider gives a powerhouse performance as the fictionalized version of Fosse, the eccentric choreographer and director of the film. As Joe Gideon, he gives a performance that is touching, sad and humorous while capturing the proper amount egomaniacal nature needed yet still is a lovable character. Loneliness is a prevalent theme of the film and a lot of it is centered on Gideon, thus it takes a powerful actor in order to capture an audiences attention for that long. Going in and out of dream states, Scheider makes the pretension relatable and reality is blurred all culminating with a proper send off of song and dance with Scheider singing Bye Bye Love. Not the traditional musical, it is certainly an interesting one with one of the best performances that I have ever seen.
