6. The Gift

The Gift is very aptly titled - if you haven't seen it yet, you're in for one hell of a treat. It came and went during the summer of last year and despite drawing a positive critical response, it was a victim of its own marketing campaign, which conveyed the wrong message completely and led to a number of moviegoers feeling cheated.

Everything from the film's trailers to its posters to its production company - Blumhouse, creators of Insidious - indicated it was a horror, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's certainly unnerving and tense, but it's not scary, and that likely disappointed a lot of moviegoers who expected more jump scares, gore and shocking twists.

But if you understand what you're getting into, then The Gift will reward you immensely. It's a taut, tight, well-directed thriller that doesn't pull any punches with its subject matter and never holds anything back. As the movie escalates and things get worse and worse for our protagonists, you'll feel genuinely uncomfortable, like you're watching something you shouldn't be privy to. As a result, The Gift - while not a horror - is far more effective than most horror flicks that get released.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
