10 Overlooked But Awesome Movies You Can Watch On Netflix Right Now

4. The Guest

About ten minutes into The Guest, you'll start to suspect (rightly so) that all is not as it seems. Your mind will run through a number of typical movie twists like the supernatural entity or the 'it's a dream!' fakeout, but it's unlikely you'll consider the truth an option.

That's because the 'twist' - when it does land - is so beautifully simple, plausible and logical, a far cry from the more outlandish third acts found in similar movies. Prior to this, The Guest toys with your expectations and makes you doubt everything you think you know, and for a thriller, there's no higher compliment.

The film opens and we're introduced to David, a war veteran visiting the family of a fellow soldier who died in combat. David claims to have spent countless hours with this soldier back when they were both on the front line... but did he? Is David who he says he is? The film will certainly answer these questions, but as previously mentioned, you probably won't see the reveal coming - and that's both a good and a bad thing.

Because when the truth is finally revealed, the film switches lanes to a more traditional action finale, losing a lot of the suspense it had spent over an hour carefully building up. In a way, it's almost unfortunate that the filmmakers felt the need to give us answers, when a more ambiguous approach to David's identity could've worked better. But either way, people would complain, and either way, The Guest is still a tidy little thriller.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
