10 Overlooked First Films By Great Directors

3. Shallow Grave - Danny Boyle

Hard Eight - Philip Baker Hall

The Doctor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Catherine de Medici have to work out what to do when Lily Allen's dad dies in their apartment.

Sounds like a recipe for success!

That's what goes does in 1994's Shallow Grave. Christopher Eccleston, Ewan McGregor, and Kerry Fox not only have to deal with Keith Allen's sudden demise, but also the large sum of money he left behind.

What follows is a grimly funny crime caper as the three friends deal with the fallout of their actions. The screenplay was written by John Hodge and the movie was directed by Danny Boyle, who would go on to work together several more times including on Trainspotting and The Beach.

Boyle's recognition would far surpass that of his writer. He would win the Best Director Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire and very nearly directed a Bond movie, but that's a story for another time.

In terms of British talent before they hit it big, you can't really do much better than Shallow Grave. Both the Scottish director and actor would become megastars and the English one would become part of the biggest franchise in sci-fi TV history.

As for Kerry Fox, well, we just hope she had some nice catering.
