10 Overrated Filmmakers Who Get Way Too Much Credit

2. Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola Sofia Coppola has skill as a director, though her esteem has just been blown way out of proportion, likely aided by the fact that she was helped every step of the way by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. Her debut, The Virgin Suicides, was a potent romantic drama, but it was her 2003 follow-up, Lost In Translation, that got everyone talking, scoring her an Oscar for the screenplay, and two nominations for producing and directing. Was it a good film? Sure. Was it a great film? I wouldn't necessarily say so, but that's not even the point here. The point is that her three subsequent films, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere and The Bling Ring, have all been disappointing follow-ups to a highly praised, Oscar-nominated film, and seem to imply that she hasn't really earned the reputation feted upon her after its release. Though she clearly has skill that overrides the nepotism claims, she needs to prove that she's worth the praise she is so often endowed with.
