10 Overused Movie Plot Devices We Never Want To See Again

3. The Ugly Nerd Makeover

She's All That Otherwise referred to as the "Ugly Duckling Transformation", this occurs in variations in films like She's All That, Miss Congeniality and Never Been Kissed, whereby an apparently homely, unattractive girl is given a makeover, and now she is the zenith of beauty. This is spoofed hilariously in Not Another Teen Movie, in which the makeover consists largely of removing Chyler Leigh's glasses and putting her hair down, the joke being that the girls cast in these sorts of roles are always extremely attractive as is, whether they're wearing a smoking red dress or some paint-soaked overalls. It's such a transparent plot device and yet curiously overused; Hollywood needs to buck up and actually cast a plain Jane in a role like this, and then glam her up so she actually looks hot. Only then is this device not going to seem ennui-inducing.
