10 Perfect Horror Movies About Hollywood

8. Barton Fink

Berberian Sound Studio
20th Century Fox

The Coen brothers could only ever tackle horror in their own idiosyncratic way. Barton Fink is among the strangest films in their canon, a rip roaring Hollywood horror satire that leaves the viewers with as many questions as it answers.

Frequent Coen muse John Turturro stars as the titular character, a New York writer dragged to the alien land of Hollywood to work for a studio. He’s out of his comfort zone personally and professionally, and the peculiar, creepy hotel his bosses put him up in doesn’t help.

It’s there he meets Charlie, played with abundant energy by John Goodman. He’s a jolly travelling salesman with a dark underbelly that only reveals itself in a bonkers, bravura segment right at the tail end of the film.

Along with the ennui and career disappointments is a murder story that sends Barton tumbling into madness and confusion as to what is and isn’t real. Barton Fink is a one of a kind film that only Joel and Ethan Coen could have made. And while it defies easy characterisation, it’s guaranteed to leave you feeling strange.
