It's unfair to say Kate Mara is hated. Where most film fans are concerned, it's probably nothing personal but she did have a knack for appearing in some of the most reviled films of the last few years: Fantastic Four, Captive, Man Down and Transcendence.

There's only so many hated movies you can make before frustrated cinemagoers turn on the actor involved, but fortunately for Mara, she stopped the rot in 2017 with a brilliant performance as the lead in military drama Megan Leavey.

The movie tells the true story of the eponymous marine corps veteran and focuses on her bond with military working dog Rex. It had the potential to be manipulative melodrama, but was actually a refreshing addition to its genre, pulling no punches in its depiction of armed conflict and presenting it from a unique angle.

Aided by a tight script and a strong supporting cast that includes Ramon Rodriguez and Tom Felton, Mara finally showed some of the acting potential that has been squandered by poor film choices on too many past occasions.
