Fans of The Golden Girls like to imagine that the actors share similar relationships to those of their characters. We don’t expect the elderly Hollywood stars to all live in the same house and spend their days swapping wisecracks, but it’s nice to think that they enjoy a similarly close bond to their beloved creations.

And while some of them did, Betty White and Bea Arthur most assuredly did not. The two never saw eye to eye during the show’s seven year run, with hostilities stemming from their disparate views on the acting process. Arthur came from theatre, and had a serious, methodical approach, often remaining in character between takes.

White, meanwhile, was the jovial figure we still see today, chatting with the audience between takes and enjoying a loose approach that wound Arthur up the wrong way. Things reportedly came to a head after White became the first of the cast to win an Emmy for her performance, resulting in Arthur calling her a particularly bad word which begins with C.

White has since downplayed the severity of the pair’s feud, and while it does seem like more a clash of styles than outright hatred, it’s fun to imagine these two pensioners locked in an endless battle.
