10 Philip K Dick Movie Adaptations Ranked Best To Worst

7. Minority Report

You’d expect a collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise to be as frothy and forgettable as their War Of The Worlds remake, but this adaptation of PKD’s 1956 short story is one of Spielberg’s darkest films.

The “period charm” of Dick’s tale doesn’t make it a natural for blockbuster treatment, but it has a terrific central idea: in the near future, three “precogs” foresee all crime before it happens, allowing the Precrime Division to arrest the guilty parties in anticipation of their activities.

Spielberg (together with writers Jon Cohen and Scott Frank) expand on the concept by giving Cruise’s character a weakness – a young son, who disappeared while in his care and was never seen again. Who far would the character be willing to go to discover what really happened? If he found the man responsible, would he kill him?

Far from your typical disposable blockbuster, Minority Report is one of the harshest PKD adaptations you’ll ever see.
