10 Planned Comic Book Movie Sequels (And What Happened)
8. Silver Surfer
The Planned Sequel
Before the steaming pile that was the Fantastic Four reboot in 2015, 20th Century Fox had almost made a Fantastic Four franchise work with 2 movies in the mid 2000s. After Sam Raimi’s incredibly popular Spider-Man films and Fox’s own badass X-Men movies, it was hoped that Fox could make another one of Marvel’s other iconic properties work on the big screen.
Silver Surfer was meant to be a spin-off from the main series, and would answer lingering questions about the mysterious alien, like how he survived the encounter with Galactus in the post-credits scene for Rise of the Silver Surfer (you thought Marvel only started doing post-credits scenes recently?).
Actor Doug Jones was intended to reprise his role as the Silver Surfer, but very little is known about the full plot details - aside from the appearance of Galactus, confirmed by the post-credits scene.
What Happened?
If Rise of the Silver Surfer had succeeded, then with the Fox-Disney merge today, we might have had the iconic character appearing to fight Thanos, but reviews for the Fantastic Four movies were negative, and the box office let Fox down.
Rise of the Silver Surfer even made less money than the original film, and to avoid any more downwards trending, Fox axed the Surfer's spin-off before it got anywhere.
