10 Planned Comic Book Movie Sequels (And What Happened)
6. Fantastic Four 3
The Planned Sequel
When Fantastic Four released in 2005, it was always intended to be a long franchise - the main four cast had signed a three-movie deal.
So, while the Fantastic Four themselves had committed to returning, Julian McMahon was also set to return as the legendary Dr. Doom for a third film, although no solid plot ideas ever materialised.
Interestingly, though, Djimon Hounsou, who you should now know as Korath the Pursuer from Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Captain Marvel, was slated to introduce the Black Panther to film audiences, over 8 years before T’Challa’s first appearance in the MCU.
What Happened?
Like the Silver Surfer standalone, Fox believed that the Fantastic Four franchise could carry itself into a much longer series, like X-Men, but similarly to Silver Surfer, it was the previous film’s bad box office performance that halted its production, as well as the blasting it received from critics.
Rise of the Silver Surfer was even nominated for two Razzie awards, in "Worst Actress" for Jessica Alba and "Worst Screen Couple" for Alba and Ioan Gruffudd, and that might not have been too encouraging for Fox.
