10 Potential Castings We're SO Glad Didn't Happen
6. Dougray Scott As Wolverine (X-Men)
You might be forgiven for asking ‘Who?’, but at the same time, Hugh Jackman was a relative unknown when he was cast too. Considering Jackman went on to shoulder one of the most iconic superhero roles for close to two decades after this, it doesn’t feel like anybody else could have come close.
Scott had actually already been cast as Wolverine, but when Mission Impossible II’s shoot ran long (as is now Mission Impossible tradition), he was forced to drop out. In what must make the circumstances even more disappointing for Scott, Mission Impossible II went on to make Tom Cruise a box office star, while he faded into obscurity.
After that, Fox were scrambling to fill the role, so it’s staggering they stumbled onto a star.
Jackman initially didn’t want to be part of it either, tossing the script out when he got to the part where Wolverine’s claws came out of his skin. Thankfully, he was convinced to keep reading, and ended up launching his career into the stratosphere.
Bob Hoskins was in the frame for Wolverine for an unmade X-Men movie in the ‘90s, which also seems like a bizarre casting on reflection.
