10 Potential Castings We're SO Glad Didn't Happen
3. Will Poulter As Pennywise (IT)
If you look at Will Poulter’s filmography, there’s a lot of ups and downs. Plastic and We’re The Millers started him on a trajectory of mediocrity, but roles in The Maze Runner, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, The Revenant and Midsommar have turned that around somewhat.
In the mix, he was also once pencilled in to play Pennywise, a role Bill Skarsgård went on to be absolutely terrifying in.
Poulter certainly has the range to pull Pennywise off, but Skarsgård was just so perfect in the part, no one could really be wishing for the change. It seems foolish to mess with the formula of the most successful horror movie ever too.
Originally, True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga was attached to direct, and he was the one who cast Poulter. However, when Fukunaga left the project after creative differences, Poulter departed shortly after.
Incoming director Andy Muschietti was actually looking forward to working with Poulter, but the actor himself was reluctant to take on this new version of the character, and felt it was best he step aside for someone more in tune with Muschietti’s vision.
In Bill Skarsgård, Muschietti clearly found that.
