7. Preacher
A comic book of a very different nature to what we have seen in cinema before, Preacher is about a Texan preacher who is possessed by an angel and a demon and he goes on a journey to literally find God. Sacrilegious and foul-mouthed, you would think there would be a market for something like this after the success of Kick Ass. Creator of the comic, Gareth Ennis had scripts for an adaptation ready as far back as the late 90's, but studio skepticism over the mix of violence and religion has always been a stumbling block. Rachel Talalay, who was most known for her work on tv was scheduled to direct, but no studio would finance the film and even Miramax who are known for taking risks passed on the project. Storm Entertainment eventually agreed to finance the movie with James Marsden in the lead but several budgetary problems led the comic to HBO who had hopes for a mini-series. But the original hopes were soon let down in 2008 when HBO decided to drop the project upon deciding that it was just too controversial. But then it seemed like Preacher would get made as Colombia Pictures purchased the rights to the series and have Sam Mendes on as director, who is a fan of the comic. Ever since that announcement things have been very quiet on the Preacher front and Mendes has obviously directed Skyfall in the meantime, so Preacher appears very much in limbo as of right now.
