10 Potentially Awful 2014 Movies That Turned Out Great
5. Edge Of Tomorrow
Why it could have been awful: Over the years Tom Cruise has earned himself a reputation as a one-note Hollywood star - very rarely does the A-list actor deviate from the heroic character template, and it's no surprise that, during the build up to the release of Edge Of Tomorrow, industry insiders were predicting a huge flop. Audiences, particularly in America, have been growing increasingly tired of Cruise's generic movies and the lack of buzz reflected this. Why it's great: While Edge Of Tomorrow might not have made quite as much money as some of Cruise's biggest box office hits, the film itself reached above and beyond previous sci-fi vehicles such as Oblivion. A smart and witty time travelling action movie offering a nice spin on the Groundhog Day premise in which a day is repeated over and over until the right outcome is achieved, it benefited from Doug Liman's sharp and dynamic direction and a performance from Cruise which was, for the most part, a little more self-effacing than usual.
