10 Problems With The Avengers No One Wants To Admit

8. Hawkeye Felt Like An Added Bonus

Hawkeye is an amazing character, and Jeremy Renner has done an absolutely stellar job of bringing the character to life. That being said, it is hard to see him as anything more than a tag along in The Avengers. We€™d been €˜introduced€™ to the character in Thor €“ if you can call two minutes of pointing an arrow an introduction €“ but he isn€™t that important to the plot of The Avengers and his character was so underdeveloped that he felt like a highly paid extra compared to the rest of the superhero cast. He led the assault on SHIELD€™s Helicarrier, but that could have been done with anyone, it was simply more flamboyant to have it done with arrows and not bullets. There were attempts to give him and Black Widow a bit of character development, hinting at a romance, but this fundamentally failed to translate on screen - what was the bizarre "reminds me of Budapest" comment about? Nobody understood this line, and all it served to do was to tell us that these characters had a history, albeit one that none of the audience were aware of. This flaw looks set to be rectified in Age Of Ultron, with Hawkeye playing a major role in order to make up for his underwhelming position in The Avengers.
